The license which was presented by the Securities and Exchange Commission grants Quidax the permission to operate as a registered crypto exchange in Nigeria as the nation begins the formal recognition and much needed regulatory oversight, to the cryptocurrency industry.

Thomas Pan: I've been writing for two years. Yesterday was my 283rd piece.

I have been able to grow an audience, one that is more or less 100% organic.

Nick Price: I knew the Thomas behind the digital persona and you have TPan as your online profile and you're obviously Thomas in real life. For me, it was a bit of a weird, strange switch because I think at the beginning of our call, I was calling you TPan and then obviously now I'm calling you Thomas.

I'm interested, I'm really curious actually. There's one thing I've been thinking about: going with TPan versus Thomas for your blogging activities, what was the reasoning behind that?

Thomas Pan: I mean, to be frank, my online pseudonym is TPan, which is literally the first initial and last name. So, probably a terrible pseudonym if I would call it one, or if anyone were to regard it that. But, I think part of using that pseudonym, and even in more public settings, particularly in the online Web3 cryptosphere, it's a little bit more of a signal that you're assimilating into that community.

For me, it just helped me to better understand and just connect with other people that do the same thing, right? If I really wanted to better understand the online Web3 and crypto culture, I wanted to really consume and drink by that fire hose. And that also meant having some version of a pseudonym, albeit very uncreative, still a version of my name, but still part of that practice and culture.

So imagine you're on LinkedIn and you don't have your real first and last name, or just a name that doesn't sort of follow that similar format, right? Like, if my name on LinkedIn was literally TPan, that's just not how it is, right?

Nick Price: That's interesting. I thought you were going to roll with the privacy aspect over everything else. It sounds like that wasn't your biggest motivation. It sounds like you really just wanted to ingrain yourself in the culture. And I think it's fair to say that Crypto and Web3 is as much of a culture as it is a technology.

Obviously now you've built through your Substack page, TPan, quite a large following. Do you consider yourself an influencer in the space, certainly when it comes to commentary on Web3 and Web3 growth?

Thomas Pan: I personally have never regarded myself as an influencer, I've jokingly called myself a thought boy. I would say I'm just someone that tries to inspire a little bit or pull on threads, right? I probably actually have a lot of dumb ideas. I've called myself out in the past.

I'm trying to introduce ideas. I'm trying to share strategies or tactics that might not be relevant for you or other readers today, but maybe in three months. Maybe I write about something that someone else actually already talked about in a separate conversation and now you're like, "Oh, I understand it in a more multi dimensional way. And this is helpful because maybe Thomas posted a stupid meme about that topic".

Not an influencer, but maybe someone that provokes more thought, more ideas, hopefully provide some frameworks, ideas, tools, tactics that maybe for another day, or maybe will be in the back pocket to be pulled out tomorrow.

I'm never going to write about SPF in terms of, "Okay, he, he got sentenced for 25 years", that's just not my focus nor angle.

The other lens is again, focusing on that growth and marketing side and now a little bit more of the cultural side and those all really do tie together. There is a lack of good content for people like myself. For people who have my type of background. For people who have my background and are trying to understand what the hell is going on in Web3 crypto, like why is there all this crazy stuff? What does price have to do with the strategy tactics? What the heck are tokens and how do they play into this?

I've been writing for two years. Yesterday was my 283rd piece.

Since where I I have been able to grow an audience, one that is more or less 100% organic.

Nick Price: Certainly the advertisers that we speak with aren't looking for volume. They're looking for the most niche categories of content. 5,000 of the right people seeing your brand is much more valuable than 100,000 of the wrong people.

I think focusing on audiences which are truly engaged with your content is always going to be more valuable than large audiences.

And I think that brings us nicely on to this second chunk of questions that I wanted to talk about.

You consult for businesses in the Web3 space from a growth and marketing standpoint. Tell me about what you do there and, maybe you could focus on why businesses reach out to you and what are some of the typical problems they face when growing.

Thomas Pan: I work with different startups or companies that are operating a Web3 and crypto. I think part of the how that came to be about just goes back to the content. The content has been a flywheel and I've been very grateful and it was initially an hype, a hypothesis I wanted to test out. Good content leads to good conversations, which leads to good opportunities.

How do you go to market with a new product, a new idea, announcing a new feature, all that stuff, and then that also touches upon content where I work with. I don't necessarily do the content. I do my own content, but in regards to strategy, voice, different approaches to remix the very standard, like "Hey, we have an announcement", right?

Actually, my most recent recent piece that I published yesterday was about Azuki and their announcement of anime chain and anime coin.

If you actually pick apart what they did, it was super smart, right? I think everyone should do this.

The playbook's being rewritten and you need to have people that obviously understand best practices from the traditional growth or marketing side.

Nick Price: It's no surprise that your angle from a growth perspective focuses on content and community. And these are the areas, as you said, where the playbook is being rewritten because ultimately with the advent of AI and generated content, the difference between good content and great content has never been more important.

With the final few minutes that we have with you, Thomas, I wanted to talk a little bit about your role at the Ethereum Foundation. Tell us what you can about what you do there. The mecca of blockchain. I'm sure it's an incredible place to be, an incredible place to rub shoulder to shoulder with some of the greatest minds in the space, but tell us a bit about your role there and what it's like to work at the Ethereum Foundation.

I'm saying, I mentioned it because I assume many of your audiences don't know you work there. I know you keep it a little bit low key, so we'll, we'll just graze upon it, but tell us what you can about that.

Thomas Pan: Totally. No, no. Happy to talk about it high level. In terms of backstory, I landed or I eventually found the opportunity at the Ethereum Foundation with the role that I'm in through my writing as well. It was actually a sort of a introduction, and introductory conversation and one thing led to another.

I work at a team or, we've been thinking about how to sort of describe it, but ultimately it's a product accelerator and the team is called Pollen Labs. We are a sub division under the privacy and scaling explorations team of the Ethereum Foundation and the privacy and scaling explorations team, or PSE for short, much shorter, is effectively the R&D arm of EF. So there actually is a fair, not full of course, but there is a degree of separation to let R&D do its thing, which is actually pretty cool and makes a lot of sense because there's a lot of different things that that division is working on.

Some key areas are more about on the sort of smart wallet side, identity and privacy, as well as ZK. And the PSE team actually has probably around a dozen, maybe 15 plus different protocols and projects and a lot of smaller ones. Different folks are sort of researching or building very early prototypes with based off these different types of protocols and concepts that are sort of really pushing the edge of Ethereum in general.

I'm sort of the growth and ops and a little community as well, in regards to the multidisciplinary team that we built. So front-end, back-end, design product, smart contracts, et cetera. Well rounded team. And I'm on that team. And we work with either internally within the EF. So, within the privacy and scaling explorations, and all those different protocols and teams that are building things.

Nick Price: It's fascinating. And when we spoke about this previously, you mentioned that one of the focuses for your team was to make this technology or bring this technology closer to the consumer. And you gave me the example of releasing the Solana phone as an example of a blockchain brand going from 0 to 100.

You guys focus on going from one to two. I assume you can't talk specifics as to what types of products or projects you're working on, but would you say the focus of Pollen Labs is pushing the blockchain into the hands of the consumer step by step?

Thomas Pan: Yeah, can't speak in too much detail on that front, and obviously some of this is my opinion, of course, but I would say it leans that way.

A lot of foundations are really great at focusing on the developer experience, there's a lot more exploration being done nowadays about what it looks like to support the builders who either have an Engineering Team or a Dev Team, or they are devs themselves, to think about what it looks like to go easy to, sort of, put this in quotes, but like direct to consumer in that way versus let's say, B2B, builder to builder, or like dev to dev, and then to the consumer.

Tom Phipps: It all comes down to just understanding user experience. What are people looking for and particularly, why aren't people in crypto yet?

If they've not touched it, why not and how can we better tailor our solution to help people make that first step moving forwards and then become that trusted partner companion throughout their crypto life cycle.

It's all about those sort of feedback loop cycles rather than spending a load of money hoping for some result.

Crypto has now been institutionalized, so to speak, so it's gone from being this magic internet money which no one ever took seriously to something which is being seen as a new financial asset tool.

That's all money down the drain. If you're not really tracking it's effectiveness and what it's actually doing for the bottom line as well.

Ioana Lungu: Many brands I think are using which is that our goal is to onboard the next 1 billion in the crypto space. So is this something Blockchain.com, or you as a team, if you have in mind this goal of onboarding as many new users on your platform as possible.

Tom Phipps: So across the space you'll hear everyone say that, but they'll never tell you how they're going to do it, and so I think, again, starting from going back to basics, really it's like we recognize the majority of people still don't use crypto. And we recognize that fintech apps are becoming more popular, so it's really looking at how do we cross that chasm from just making crypto something that used to be this magic internet money, which was a bit sort of siloed and isolated into this thing, which is just like the next logical sort of evolution of like modern fintech, so obviously you had the rise of challenger banks and everything they were doing.

I think we'd probably see blockchain and what we do is the follow on from that and being that sort of gateway into the crypto world, so It all comes down to just understanding user experience, what are people looking for and particularly, why aren't people in crypto yet?

If they've not touched it, why not and how can we better tailor our solution to help people make that first step moving forwards and then become that trusted partner companion throughout their crypto life cycle. So I think one thing that really helps us is obviously we've been around in the space now since 2011. We really pride ourselves on building that trust reliability, which you'd come to expect from any other sort of FinTech platform.

Right. But as you've seen in the crypto space, it's still new, right? It's nascent and other platforms have potentially struggled with the amount of users using them or all that sort of thing. So it's about looking to scale in an effective way, which isn't necessarily saying "Oh, yeah, we're doing something totally different to modern finance".

This is just the next step of the evolution of the financial world.

And I liked what you said earlier that you're sort of strategizing almost like week to week because the market is fluctuating so much that maybe it wouldn't make that much sense to do like a quarter plan and then to follow that blindly. You're sort of listening to the sentiments of the users on a week-to-week basis of really constantly listening to them.

It's all about those sort of feedback loop cycles rather than spending a load of money hoping for some result that's, you know, far in the future and just praying it's gonna lead to something. We really want to, yeah, make some sort of plan and iterate week on week just to really test and see how things are going rather than, yeah, making any big aims and miss them wildly just because state of the market changes and we've not really accounted for anything like that.

Ioana Lungu: So what's on the plan for maybe this week and the next week? What are you currently working on?

Tom Phipps: Yeah, so, our polling feature is going, we tested it last week, it's going live this week and it's becoming a standard feature within our product now. So, if you're using our platform, you should see these fun little questions, which will pop up on a weekly basis. And again, it's fantastic.

We can get this feedback from our users, but also it could lead to content that we can then use. People love hearing how users are exploring the world of crypto. And yeah, depending on the questions we use, I'm sure we can create loads of great content from that as well, which is also informative, entertaining.

And so it's, yeah, using this one thing for many different use cases. This is really quite exciting. We've seen some great traction last week if we roll this out and make it a sort of a standard feature. I think it will also be a great sort of retention tool as well in terms of people will come back to the app want to engage, and I'm sure we can sort out some pro apps and NFT rewards at some point in the future to build that community around the platform, too.

Ioana Lungu: So speaking about the future now, how do you see the crypto industry evolving in the next, let's say, a couple of years?

Tom Phipps: Yeah, great question. So, I mean, it's been an interesting year in terms of regulatory development. I think that's probably been the main narrative recently. And I say regulatory development, it's things such as Bitcoin ETFs.

You look at Europe and their legislation as well. It's clear that crypto has now been institutionalized, so to speak, so it's gone from being this magic internet money which no one ever took seriously to something which is being seen as a new financial asset tool, whatever you want to call it, and I think that's going to continue in terms of, yeah, regulators are gonna look to incorporate crypto into these more traditional markets, leverage the tech, whatever it may be.

And yeah, obviously there's gonna be challenges along the way given it's pseudonymous tech, etcetera, I think you've probably seen Elizabeth Warren out in the US go and go on her campaign against crypto, but she's convinced it's majorly used by bad actors.

And of course there's going to be, like any technology, there's gonna be bad actors along the way but, you know, regulation is probably a good thing as long as it's proactive regulation that is formed alongside industry input, so having the people on the ground actually build this technology advising these regulators is key here, not regulators, you know, blindly going at it, just trying to lock down this technology, whatever it may be. So cautiously optimistic on that side.

I think the UK has made a good start in saying they're going to be listening to Linda, listening to the industry leaders, whether, you know, they do or not, proof will be in the pudding, but what we've seen so far has been seemingly positive in terms of the state of the market. Yeah, I mean bitcoin's hovering around its previous all time high from a few years ago, which is encouraging in terms of the market pretty much follows Bitcoin. And yeah, I mean, you look at these novel applications that just keep coming out, you know, week, week by week, month by month, the innovation isn't slowing down here, right?

So, as an industry, as a whole, I'm quite excited for what the future brings and to be working at a company that's going to be a part of that, even better.

Ioana Lungu: And, from a marketing standpoint, what would be one, again, key strategy that you think it's super important for people who are in this space right now to really focus on?

Tom Phipps: So I think the trap a lot of people fall into is they'll just spend, spend, spend and not actually like, work out how effective that spend is, right? They'll spend because they're like, "Oh, we need to market. We need to push our brand out there. We need to do this. We need to do that".

That's all money down the drain. If you're not really tracking it's effectiveness and what it's actually doing for the bottom line as well. So I think, again, it's being very intentional with how you use these different marketing tools and channels and working out what's most effective for you. It's all about the data and checking. Is this something we should be doing or should we be considering a different channel, a different approach?

It all goes back to that sort of iterative learning process where you need to just regularly be assessing "Is this effective?" Because I think so many teams just blow stupid amounts of money just because they think "We just got to spend" well, yeah, you can but it doesn't mean it's gonna be effective.

#1 - Keep Them Scrolling 📱

How do you make users scroll down your page?

• Test longer pages, as they often perform better than shorter ones. Address in your copy all customer questions as you would in a face-to-face interaction.

• Identify the "fold" on your webpage (the point where users must start scrolling).

• Make sure your page doesn't have empty spaces or horizontal bands/lines that may look like the end of content.

• Use arrows (or other visual) cues to show that more content is below.

• Tell users what benefits they’ll get from scrolling further, like special offers or additional information.

• Include sticky calls-to-action as users scroll to prompt engagement at any point.

Remember to continually test and optimize your page based on user behavior!

Michelle Latzer: Always stop and listen rather than the startup mentality of speed and just run forward and kind of sprint the idea in a bear market.

But the thing that really works in Web3, which is amazing to me, because it never was in other industries that I was in, is the personal element, like the events, the conferences, and how crucial overall that plays in marketing and sales.

We try to be very close to almost all of our customers to understand their use case to understand what we're doing well, what we're not doing well, how we can improve, what are features they would want to be seeing. So always maintain this community. I call it to all customers and be very close to them. So we can be up to beat on what they need and how the space is evolving.

Ioana Lungu: You just went straight into creating your own business.

So how has been the journey so far from the very beginning compared to now one year and a half later?

Michelle Latzer: I picked probably the hardest of times to start this journey and with three, it's like, was the bottom of the barrel. Not quite the bottom. It was pre-FTX, but it was getting there already. It was definitely not the market we're seeing even today. So I think it has a lot of advantages at the moment.

You start by being very aware of your resources and your needs as a company of what you can expand, what you can't. We were fortunate enough to meet our investors very early on in our journey. So we were funded and we're able to start a team and to start this process of ideation and experimentation with different technologies, very kind of early in our journey.

And I think even so, we were still very much like the thing that we did very well is really keeping on listening to the market. And especially in a bear market, it's super important to kind of always stop and listen rather than the startup mentality of speed and just run forward and kind of sprint the idea in a bear market.

I think it's more important to keep on listening and to kind of more like jog. I like the running metaphors. I'm a runner. So you'll keep hearing those, right? So I think it's more important to run a bit slower, always keeping one ear open for what the customers are saying, what the market is saying.

And if you're really able to crack this use case and the needs during a bear market and to build this product because you're funded and you have the ability to get the team. Then once that bear, it's cyclical thing, right? So bear markets are bound to eventually be over. And if you're able to survive and to really kind of with this amazing product that you really listened to the market and solve the problem that's there, then you'll be the leading kind of provider within your niche.

But I think a lot of the things that are important are really understanding the problem. Solving something based on the actual what they're saying, not what you think and not what you want and keeping on iterating, like not being very fixated on one idea or one messaging. We have a big marketing topic here, but marketing is a huge thing in our society.

Space is like, how do you want to message like kind of product market? What you're building, what's the right messaging, what institutions are you selling to? All of those things are things that we really immersed ourselves in all of those questions during this year. And I think it allowed us to get to this point way stronger.

Ioana Lungu: How you approach marketing, especially in B2B, and how do you get new clients on board?

Michelle Latzer: Our main kind of audience that we are trying to sell to is the developers themselves.

Which is something that we're experimenting now with doing more paid marketing towards, but we've been doing in the last years a lot of blogging, a lot of tutorials and putting ourselves in events of developers to really teach them about the abilities of our solution.

But the thing that really works in Web3, which is amazing to me, because it never was in other industries that I was in, is the personal element, like the events, the conferences, and how crucial overall that plays in marketing and sales.

Just because I feel like this world so many companies are fully remote. The conference time is the time for all of them to really meet in person. So a lot actually are attending.

So whenever you go to conferences, it's not like a big event. In other industries, cloud or finance that you go to one a year or you go to this, here like people go to almost all of them all the time, at least the big ones, no matter if it's in Asia, if it's in Europe or if it's in the US and it's incredible because you're able to really build a community, know everyone, which I think it's also people like, when I say to people, yeah, you know, I had a drink with my competitor, they're like, wow, like, how did you meet them?

Like, you know, we see each other all the time. It's great. We can become friends. We can know new companies that are starting, you know of them pretty, pretty soon. You can create a lot of partnerships and collaborations and a lot of coincidental meetings that lead to great things.

To be honest, I think that the in person element so far, again, experimenting with mostly non paid has been amazing. It's been the most fruitful, highest ROI and we'll always be sending someone from our team to events, especially the big, larger events. Even if not, hosting some happy hour or something like that, but it doesn't even require you to have your own booth or anything.

It's just the presence attending really booking meetings ahead of time with people you know are going. That is what's proven. I think most successful for us.

Ioana Lungu: I can imagine that may be a bit difficult considering that developers are sort of, your target, customers, if you may. I'm really curious to know if you have any strategies that would, let's say, bring them together or just foster this community feeling.

Michelle Latzer: Yeah, it's a great question. I think it's something ongoing that we're trying to tackle, especially now on the marketing side as we, we finally hired someone on the marketing. So it's something that we're going to be really focusing on this year. In general, again, I treat it as two different, two types of community that we try to foster.

One is obviously we always want to have one ear on the side. And the ecosystem and the market and be part of those discussions. And that, we do through really being present at events and hackathons at forums and communities that are either of our peers and colleagues, or where a lot of customers are around, if it's around loyalty, around some defy around gaming, it's stuff that we always try to be part of those forms conversations.

And I'll say that another thing that I treat as community is really our customer base, because I feel like in general, you sell something, especially being a developer tool, usually people come to your website, they try it out, they pay and you kind of know their name, you adore, you don't, and they go, we try to be very close to almost all of our customers to understand their use case to understand what we're doing well, what we're not doing well, how we can improve, what are features they would want to be seeing.

So always maintain this community. I call it to all customers and be very close to them. So we can be up to beat on what they need and how the space is evolving.

And I'll say that again. If we're able to move customers from one of our competitors to us, have to always listen and understand if you're really answering their problems and if we solve them, because then they can always leave us and go to someone else again.

So from my perspective, especially in those early days, you really want to be the closest you can and customer-focused, kind of customer-oriented, customer-focused, and we try to, we do it like a company-wide, right? It's not just me or Julie or Bren or who does our sales. Like it's also all the engineers. I really care that the engineers themselves today do a lot of the support and integration help for the customers. They know where the customers are getting stuck.

It's important. Where customers finding bugs, like this is important that our developers are being very, kind of, in tune with what's happening on the business side. So this kind of notion of full everyone understanding everything, every element of the business is very important.
